Adrian Otaegui of Spain strolled to a dominant victory in the Andalucia Masters after successfully appealing the fines issued by the DP World Tour for appearing in LIV Golf events. The restrictions prevented Otaegui from playing in DP World Tour events.
Otaegui entered the final round at Valderrama with a six-shot lead and was never in danger of being caught. He fired a final round 68, which gave him a tournament record total of 19 under par and won him the tournament.
Joakim Lagergren of Sweden also shot 68 and finished in second place, six shots behind the winner. Min Woo Lee of Australia came in third, three strokes further down.
Otaegui was one of three players who had their spots in the field for the Genesis Scottish Open in July increased as a result of successful appeals against the sanctions they were given for competing in the first LIV event in Hertfordshire.
Members of the DP World Tour who participated in tournaments on dissident tours supported by Saudi Arabia without first obtaining authorization to do so were disqualified from the Scottish Open and given individual fines of £100,000.
However, during a hearing in front of Sport Resolutions (UK), the suspensions that had been imposed on Otaegui, Ian Poulter, and Justin Harding were temporarily stayed, awaiting the determination of whether or not their substantive appeals would be successful. The hearing is planned to take place in February.
Otaegui competed in three of the first four LIV events; however, it is unclear whether he will compete in any other tournaments in the future.
The 29-year-old golfer told Sky Sports that he was “very, very proud” after winning his fourth title on the DP World Tour.
“I am overjoyed to have won for the first time in Spain, especially in front of these spectators and on the golf course that is my favorite in Spain. It’s hard to believe, but the past week went by without a hitch.
“I just attempted to beat the others here today by playing my game, trying to play as if I had just teed off being square, and just trying to win,” she said. “I just tried to play my game.” The primary objective for the day was for me to maintain my concentration and approach each and every hole with the same level of fervor.
“Over the course of the whole week, there was an extraordinary quantity of foot traffic, particularly yesterday and today,” the sentence read.
The scenery was incredible, what with all of the slender fairways, all of the cork trees, all of the spectators, and all of the children.
When Angel Hidalgo of Spain reached the 18th green, he was in tears since finishing in fourth place earned him a DP World Tour card for the upcoming season.
